How do I calculate how much fabric I need to purchase?

To calculate how much fabric you need to purchase, it's best to consult your upholsterer. They can provide accurate measurements based on the specific furniture piece, pattern repeat, and fabric width.

What is a Martindale Rub Test?

The Martindale Rub Test is a standardized method used to measure the durability and abrasion resistance of fabrics, including upholstery materials, curtains, and wallpapers with fabric-like finishes. It determines how well a fabric can withstand wear and tear over time, making it a critical factor for selecting materials for high-use areas.

How the Test Works

Abrasion Testing: A piece of fabric is placed under a testing machine, where it is subjected to repetitive rubbing by a standard abrasive surface. The machine moves in a figure-eight pattern (called a Martindale motion) to mimic natural wear and tear.

Cycles/Counts: The test measures the number of rubs or cycles the fabric can endure before showing signs of visible wear, such as thread breaking, pilling, or color loss.

Results: The fabric's durability is expressed in Martindale Cycles or Rub Counts (e.g., 20,000 rubs). The higher the number, the more durable the fabric.

Durability Ratings

The Martindale Rub Test results are typically categorized as follows:

  • Rub Count Durability : 6,000–10,000
  • Recommended Use : Light Domestic, cushions, curtains, light-use furniture.

  • Rub Count Durability : 10,000–15,000
  • Recommended Use : General Domestic, Everyday residential furniture.

  • Rub Count Durability : 15,000–25,000
  • Recommended Use : Heavy Domestic / Light, Commercial High-traffic home use, small office furniture.

  • Rub Count Durability : 25,000+
  • Recommended Use : Heavy Commercial Offices, hotels, restaurants, public spaces.

    Why Is It Important?

  • Choosing the Right Fabric: Helps consumers and designers select fabrics appropriate for their intended use, balancing durability with aesthetics.
  • Longevity: Ensures fabrics meet the demands of high-use environments without wearing out quickly.
  • Performance Standards: Provides a reliable, industry-accepted measure for comparing fabric quality.

    Limitations

  • The test evaluates abrasion resistance but does not account for other factors like fading, staining, or structural integrity.
  • It is primarily applicable to fabrics and textiles, not to other wallpaper materials like vinyl or paper.

Conclusion

The Martindale Rub Test is an essential metric for understanding the durability of fabrics, particularly for upholstery and heavy-use areas. When selecting materials, look for a rub count that matches the intended use to ensure the fabric meets your performance and longevity expectations.

How do I care for my fabrics?

We recommend DRY CLEANING ONLY for all our fabrics to ensure they retain their optimal appearance.

Furniture Placement in Your Home

To prevent fading or discoloration, keep fabrics out of direct sunlight by using curtains or blinds as protection. Additionally, exposure to direct heat sources such as radiators, heaters, or fireplaces can cause similar damage. Position furniture away from these potential risks. Be cautious of placing sharp items like keys, pens, buckles, or similar objects on the fabric to avoid damage.

Routine Care

Remove surface dust, loose fibers, or bobbles weekly using a vacuum or soft brush. Use a low vacuum setting along with a brush attachment to gently clean the fabric. Regular gentle vacuuming not only removes dust but also minimizes pilling, which can occur with some types of fabric.
